We’re excited to announce a powerful new addition to our Awhi Awa | Embrace a Stream project: Māui and Hector’s Dolphins are now included in our educational kete, which are available for purchase now!
🔗 Order your kete here: https://www.endangeredspecies.org.nz/awhi-awa
Why This Matters
Māui and Hector’s dolphins are among the world’s smallest and most endangered dolphins, yet they used to be the most common dolphins here in Aotearoa NZ.
With fewer than 50 Māui dolphins left, these rare and precious marine mammals – also known as Pōpoto – are #1 on our Top 50 Endangered Species List. Sadly only 10,000 to 15,000 Hector’s dolphins remain, down from 29,000 in the last 45 years.
They face serious threats from harmful fishing practices, toxic run-off from our waterways, habitat loss, and disease.
Empowering Communities to Act
The Awhi Awa Kete now includes new Māui and Hector’s Dolphin resources, developed to raise awareness, drive community action, and inspire change:
🐬 Educational fact sheets on dolphin conservation
🪧 Beautifully crafted metal signage made from recycled stainless steel
🔨 Posters and practical action guides
🛖 How your school or kura, marae, community group or business can awhi and restore an urban or rural waterway near you.
🌊Resources to restore waterways and protect ocean habitats
📚 Educational modules for classrooms and community groups
🎥 DIY guides and easy action steps for immediate impact.
These tools will help communities restore local waterways, reduce pollutants reaching the ocean, and protect the fragile habitats Māui and Hector’s dolphins depend on.
Your support is crucial — each kete sold funds the expansion of this work across Aotearoa.
You can also donate directly to our Māui and Hector’s campaign to support our mahi:
✅ Advocacy for stronger freshwater and ocean protections
✅ Sharing the latest science and solutions
✅ Community outreach, engagement and empowerment to take action
Together, we can restore the lifelines that feed the ocean and give Māui and Hector’s dolphins a fighting chance.
🌊 Protect our seas. Protect a dolphin. Protect our future.
Ngā mihi nui for standing with us. Together. Better.
