Endangered Species Hui 2026
An Urgent Call to Act

Taonga Tuku Iho: Restoring Māuri Through Collective Action
2nd and 3rd September | The Atrium, Wintec, Kirikiriroa | Hamilton

This two-day national hui brings together iwi, communities, scientists, creatives and advocates to connect, collaborate and act on our shared responsibilities to te taiao. It is a practical, action-focused space to share what’s working, explore new innovations, and build momentum for collective impact.

Many taonga species and their entire habitats are on the edge of ecological collapse.

Decades of damage have pushed thousands of species to the brink, and time is running out. This hui is about coming together to uphold different values, systems and behaviours to enable greater collective responsibility to restore the health of people and ecosystems across Aotearoa.

This hui is about celebrating the unique and treasured species and environments that we are lucky enough to share here in Aotearoa.

It is about connecting and empowering each other to make change and bring others along on the journey.

The hard truth

  • 76% of native freshwater fish are threatened or at risk, including tuna and whitebait.

  • Less than 2% of waterways are pristine, nearly half of rivers and lakes are in poor health.

  • 80% of shorebirds and over 90% of seabirds are threatened or at risk.

  • Destructive fishing practices continue to damage marine ecosystems that support dolphins, whales, migratory fish and many other taonga species.

  • At least 3,747 native species are officially listed as threatened or at risk, with many more yet to be assessed.

Honouring Te Tiriti

Under Te Tīriti o Waitangi, Māori were guaranteed tino rangatiratanga (chieftainship) over all their taonga (treasures). Yet the degradation of whenua, awa, roto, ngahere and moana has been immense. Honouring Te Tīriti means placing Māori leadership, mātauranga Māori and tikanga at the centre of restoration across the motu. Over two days, the latest in new innovations, scientific developments and successes will be shared, to inspire us all as to what is possible.
