Index Engineering Embraces Urban Waterway in Rotorua

Index Engineering in Rotorua has committed to caring for the stream that runs past its site, becoming part of the Awhi Awa | Embrace a Stream movement.

The decision followed a workshop with Endangered Species Foundation General Manager, Natalie Jessup, who outlined the state of Aotearoa’s waterways: nearly half of rivers are unsafe for swimming, 90% of wetlands are gone, and more than three-quarters of native freshwater fish are threatened or at risk. She also shared how businesses and communities around the world are restoring urban streams and reconnecting people with their waterways.

Supported by an Awhi Awa kete, filled with resources, stream care guides and kōaro (native fish) signage made of scrap stainless steel, Index Engineering staff will ensure their local stream stays clear of rubbish and contaminants, while raising awareness about the connection between urban drains and Rotorua’s rivers and lakes.

Business Manager Ingrid Snyman says the commitment reflects the company’s responsibility to place and actively looking after where they live:

“Rotorua is surrounded by lakes and waterways, and many of our drains run straight into the lake. This is our backyard – we want to play our part in protecting it. Through Awhi Awa we hope to inspire other businesses to step up and take action.”

Natalie says Index Engineering’s move sets an important example:

“When businesses take responsibility for the waterways they’re connected to, the benefits flow well beyond their own patch. It builds a culture of care that protects both people and wildlife.”

The Endangered Species Foundation will continue to support Index Engineering as they begin their journey – and hopes to see more businesses, schools and communities across Aotearoa follow their lead. We’re looking forward to other businesses taking up the challenge, engaging their staff, and taking a proactive approach to caring for waterways.
