In a local community event held at Billy Café in Grafton, Tāmaki Makaurau, three local organisations - the Grafton Residents Association, Neighbourhood Watch Tāmaki Makaurau, and the Endangered Species Foundation - came together to host a community event focused on restoring and caring for local waterways.

The gathering was the start of a new project to engage local people with shared responsibility for the health of our urban waterways. Through kōrero and connection, residents explored how united efforts can make a real difference for our environment and our communities.

Maps were shared showing the location of local drains, and residents signed up to take responsibility for keeping them clear—making sure only rain goes down the stormwater system. By “adopting” nearby drains, locals are helping prevent pollution and protect the streams that flow through Grafton and into the Waitematā harbour.

The Awhi Awa – Embrace a Stream project, led by the Endangered Species Foundation, was showcased as a practical way for people to take part.

Conversations flowed about the health of our most endangered freshwater fish, the plight of Hector’s dolphins, and how reconnecting with our waterways can strengthen our sense of belonging and resilience as communities.

The event demonstrated the power of collaboration — when neighbours, local groups, and organisations work together, the impact reaches far beyond a single stream or street. It’s a reminder that caring for our waterways begins with community, and together, we can ensure a thriving, connected future for people and nature alike.

This event was made possible thanks to our funders Bupa, Air New Zealand and WWFNZ who fund our Awhi Awa | Embrace a Stream project outreach nationwide.
