The Māui dolphin, or pōpoto, is found only in the coastal waters off New Zealand's North Island. The smallest and most endangered marine dolphins in the world. Curious, gentle, and playful. And right now, on the verge of existence.
Fewer than 50 adults remain.
Fishing nets. Bottom trawling. Destructive fishing. These are the main reasons for their demise. Every year, the window to save them narrows.
If we don't act now, Aotearoa New Zealand will become one of the first countries in the world to let a dolphin go extinct on our watch.

MĀUI NEED BETTER PROTECTIONS.
With only ~50 adults remaining, Māui dolphins are among the world’s rarest dolphins. Their close relatives, Hector’s dolphins, have faced a similar decline, from around 50,000 in 1975 to just 10,000–15,000 today.
Human activity is the leading cause of their decline. Bottom trawling and set-netting remain major threats, with dolphins at risk of becoming entangled in nets, unable to surface, and drowning. Bottom trawling also damages the seafloor habitats that support the species Māui and Hector’s dolphins rely on for food.
We cannot wait for certainty. Māui dolphins need protection across their full potential habitat, out to 100-metre depths or 20 nautical miles offshore.
